Level 1 Health Science Academy

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs P. Afele

If you are considering any kind of Health Science career, whether that's a doctor, nurse, physiotherapist, nutritionist, psychiatrist, optometrist, pharmacist or anesthetist to name but a few, this is the course for you. This course consists of one line of compulsory Science and a second line of Science which will thoroughly prepare you for the requirements of Level 2 Sciences and beyond.

Course Overview

Term 1
In your Biology line you will study the interactions between Micro-organisms (Bacteria and Fungi) and Humans (AS90950).
In your Chemistry/Physics line you will start the year looking at some common metals (AS90946) found in the items we use every day. You will report on the Chemical and Physical properties of these metals and explain how these properties perfectly suit their purpose. At the end of Term 1 you will begin a scientific report on Heat (AS90943) and how different materials affect heating and cooling.

Term 2
In your Biology line you will look at different life processes (MRS C GREN) and complete a scientific report on how exercise affects the human body (AS90925).
In your Chemistry/Physics line you will complete your Heat assessment (AS90941). You will then complete the term starting your Chemistry external which looks at Acids and Bases (AS90944).

Term 3
In your Biology line you will continue with how Life Processes affect the human body but move from an exercise context into how alcohol can affect the teenage body. Part way through Term 3 you will start your final Achievement Standard for Biology an external exam on Genetics (AS90948) where you will look into inheritance, variation and sexual reproduction.
In your Chemistry/Physics line you will complete your Acids and Bases content and complete the final Achievement Standard for Physics an external exam on Mechanics (AS90940) where you will look at motion, forces and energy conversion.

Term 4
In both of your Science lines Term 4 is time to prepare for the final assessments of the year. You will revise the three external Science topics you have completed (Chemistry, Genetics and Mechanics) which will all be assessed in one three hour external exam.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students wishing to take 01SCM must complete an application form. Every applicant will be interviewed and selections will be made after this. The decision will also be based on student performance and ability in Year 10 as well as student potential. Students interested in 01SCM should be considering studying Science at a tertiary level.
