Year 10 Te Reo Maaori
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr T. Tangitu.
Students consolidate and extend basic skills learned in Year 9 while studying new topics. Topics covered include: Pepeha; Mihimihi; Whakapapa; Taku Kura; Taku Kainga; Te Marae; Tangata Rongonui; Hākinakina; and Te Whare Tapere. Skills acquired through activities using all language modes, such as:
•kōrero/speaking - mihimihi, role play, giving instructions, playing games
•whakarongo/listening - following instructions, directed listening tasks, playing games
•pānui/reading - narratives, translations
•tuhituhi/writing - personal information, explanations
Learning topics could include:
Ko wai au?/Who am I? - Extending our introduction of ourselves by giving greetings to various groups in the appropriate manner.
Ko wai taatou?/Who are we? - Extending our knowledge of how to communicate about our experiences at kura.
Kei te Marae/At the Marae - Learning how to communicate about experiences on a Marae.
Kei te Kaainga/At Home - Learning how to communicate about our lives at home with our whaanau.
Te Ao Taiohi/The Teenage World - Learning how to communicate about our experiences as teenagers - social outings, hobbies and interests.
Te Ao Haakinakina/The Sporting World - Learning how to communicate about our favourite sport or sports.
Te Whare Tapere/The House of Entertainment - Learning about traditional Maaori games and past times.

Recommended Prior Learning
Open Entry. Year 9 Te Reo Maaori course completion would be beneficial but not essential.

Knowledge of te Reo Maaori and the tikanga pertaining to the Maaori culture is highly regarded in all career pathways in Aotearoa. This knowledge is particularly sort after in the areas of Education, Tourism, Civil Service and Local Governance.
