Level 1 Health Science Academy

01SCM
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs N. Stevens

If you are considering any kind of Health Science career, whether that's a doctor, nurse, physiotherapist, nutritionist, psychiatrist, optometrist, pharmacist or anaethetist to name but a few, this is the course for you. This course consists of one line of compulsory Science and a second line of Science which will thoroughly prepare you for the requirements of Level 2 Sciences and beyond.

Course Overview

Term 1
In your Biology line you will study the interactions between Micro-organisms (Bacteria and Fungi) and Humans (AS90950) and start a research report on different Life Processes and how drinking alcohol (AS90949) can affect the teenage body.
In your Chemistry/Physics line you will start the year looking at some common metals (AS90946) found in the items we use every day. You will report on the Chemical and Physical properties of these metals and explain how these properties perfectly suit their purpose. At the end of Term 1 you will begin a practical course which looks at Electricity in your home (AS90935) and how different circuits can be used and controlled.

Term 2
In your Biology line you will complete your research into the Life Processes (Nutrition and Excretion) and the affect of alcohol on the teenage body. Having already learnt how the human body digests food you will spend the rest of the second term looking at how other Mammals consume and use energy in the first of two externals: Mammals as Consumers (AS90929).
In your Chemistry/Physics line you will complete your everyday Electricity (AS90941) internal assessment and complete a linked investigation (AS90935) using the results of your experimental data. You will complete the term starting your Chemistry external which looks at Acids and Bases (AS90944).

Term 3
In your Biology line you will finish the external content for Mammals as Consumers and do the final Achievement Standard for Biology; Genetics (AS90948) where you will look into inheritance, variation and sexual reproduction.
In your Chemistry/Physics line you will complete your Acids and Bases content and complete the final Achievement Standard for Physics; Mechanics (AS90940) where you will look at motion, forces and energy conversion.

Term 4
In both of your Science lines term 4 is time to prepare for the final assessments of the year. You will revise the three external Science topics you have completed (Chemistry, Genetics and Mechanics) and the one Biology topic (Mammals as Consumers) to prepare for the two exams you are scheduled to complete.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students wishing to take 01SCM must complete an application form. Every applicant will be interviewed and selections will be made after this. The decision will also be based on student performance and ability in Year 10 as well as student potential. Students interested in 01SCM should be considering studying Science at a tertiary level.
