Recommended Prior Learning

It is highly recommended that you already have the conversational language in both writing and speaking to ensure you get the best out of this course. This may have been achieved by speaking and communicating in Lea Faka-Tonga at home, amongst friends and/or in Year 9 or Year 10.

The Year 11 Tongan Language course is designed to cater to our Tongan students who speak intermediate to advanced Tongan. The course offers 24 NCEA Level 1 credits, 14 credits are internal and 10 credits are external. The course has been designed to look at familiar contexts such as daily routines, family, school and cultural aspects, each of these will allow opportunities for students to speak, read, write and listen using the Tongan language.

This course is portfolio based: Students must submit 2 writing pieces, 2 interaction pieces and 1 presentation to complete the portfolio. 


Pathway

Level 2 Lea Faka-Tonga

Students who choose the Level 1 Tongan language could have the opportunity to take the Tongan Language further into Year 13. Career pathways for languages can consist of translator/interpreter roles, there are also opportunities for foreign language intelligence roles and language teachers.
