Open Entry. The Te Ao Maaori Learning Area will provide an environment of learning to those who have an interest or passion for Maaori heritage or Te Ao Maaori (Maaori Knowledge).


Te Waharoa is intended for students Year 10 to 12 who are already taking Te Waharoa. This course is a two year programme where students have the opportunity to obtain a Level 2 National Certificate in Maaori that recognises Maaori skills and knowledge. Credits gained through Te Waharoa can also be counted towards obtaining NCEA Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. The course will be made up of Mau rakau (maori weaponry) credit attainment under the authority of Te Whare Tū Tauā, a nationally recognized and accredited programme, incorporating Te Reo Maaori, Hauora and Tikanga Maaori. Modules will be determined by student interest and resources available within the school and community. 

This course requires students to be resilient and show commitment. Students will have the opportunity to obtain Level 1, 2 or 3 NZQA credits all within a Te Ao Maaori framework.  

27 credits at Level 1 

34 credits at Level 2 

18 credits at Level 3
