Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr V. Shankar

The Science and Business of growing Plants – for the Modern World. A selection of Unit Standards will be agreed with the student. THEORY + Practical Hands on learning In the REWA Garden here at school and on Offsite Training days - FARM - Permakai in Waiuku - NURSERY - Te Whangai Trust in Pukekohe (and others)

Core Standards = 14 Credits (1) Sowing Seeds and Monitoring Germination (2) Planting out by hand - Transplanting  (3) Pricking out and Potting on - separating seedlings from a tray into individual pots 

Additional Standards = 13 Credits  - Journal Writing, Hort Maths, Hazards

RECOMMENDED PRIOR LEARNING Satisfactory completion of Science would be advantageous.  An interview with Mr V. Shankar, Horticulture Teacher, may be required.


Pathway

Level 3 Modern Horticulture

This course is helpful if you want to work in the Horticulture industry. Some examples of this kind of work include - gardening, conservation, Nursery work, forestry, growing fruit and vegetables, landscaping, cropping, floral work, beekeeping, farming, designing, taking care of parks and sportsgrounds.
